Toyota Corolla lost the title of best-selling car in the world for the first time in 20 years

There have been some interesting changes in the global ranking of best-selling cars for 2023. For the first time in the last 20 years, the electric crossover Tesla Model Y became the new leader, ahead of the Toyota Corolla.

Data for the ranking is taken into account for 162 countries, and they are updated monthly. Focus2move analysts use the latest available registration data from local authorities in each country.

Here's what the numbers say:

Tesla Model Y became the world leader with 1.15 million units sold. This is an increase of 50.8% compared to the previous year. The Model Y has also become the world's best-selling electric car. It is popular in both Europe and China, where it sold more than 456,000 units in 2023.

The Toyota Corolla came in second with 1.13 million units sold. Although sales were down 1.1%, the Corolla remains one of the world's favorite models.

The Toyota RAV4 dropped to third place with 934,910 units sold. This crossover is still in demand, but its lack of a pure electric version has had an impact on its position in the rankings.

The Ford F-Series, the top-ranked pickup truck, came in fourth with 901,569 sales. It is followed by the Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota Camry.

The Hyundai Tucson came in eighth place with 628,036 new registrations. It beat out the Toyota Hilux and Ram pickup truck.

Such changes indicate the growing popularity of electric vehicles and irreversible changes in the global automotive industry.
