Ford introduces artificial intelligence for quality control

Ford has taken a step toward more reliable production by using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect defects on the assembly line.

The new technology, based on IBM's Maximo Vision platform, uses regular smartphones as “inspectors”.

With the help of telephone cameras, AI scans details for various inconsistencies, from the curvature of body panels to the absence of nameplate.
The system has already shown its effectiveness.

For example, at the Van Dike plant, where in 2023 an average of 40 oil pumps with defective rubber seals was installed monthly, after the introduction of AI in April 2024, no such case was recorded.

The AI can recognize 463 types of manufacturing errors, including warped body panels, missing door latch, improper installation or missing nameplates.

AI is currently used in 20 Ford plants around the world.

The introduction of this technology is expected to help the company reduce the number of recalls, for which Ford has been the leader among American automakers for three years in a row. Motor.ru reports this.
