Toyota retained leadership in the car market despite difficulties

Despite falling sales and a number of scandals, Toyota Motor managed to retain its title as the world's largest automaker in the first half of 2024, auto.ru reports.

This is the fifth year in a row that the Japanese giant has led the global auto market. According to Kyodo data, Toyota sold 5,16 million vehicles, putting it ahead of its closest rivals. However, the company faced significant challenges, including a 9,8% decline in production and a 32% drop in domestic sales.

Second place went to Volkswagen, whose sales also declined.

Volkswagen's sales in the first half of 2024 amounted to 4,35 million vehicles, slightly less than last year. The third place in the ranking of the largest automakers is still open. According to preliminary estimates, such giants as General Motors and Stellantis may compete for this position.
