Chinese cars lead the European market

Chinese automakers have made a breakthrough in the European electric vehicle market. In June, sales of Chinese electric cars reached a record 23 thousand units, occupying more than 11% of the market, reports auto.ru.

The main reason for this success was the upcoming increase in duties on imports from China. In order to have time to sell products before the introduction of new tariffs, manufacturers offered significant discounts.

The majority of electric cars sold were MG brand cars - almost 13,5 thousand units. BYD managed to sell about 4 thousand more electric cars, whose recognition grew after sponsoring “Euro 2024”.

New EU customs duties on car imports from China, reaching 37% depending on the brand, came into force on July 5. However, these tariffs are temporary. The parties are currently negotiating a long-term import regulation mechanism, which is due to come into force in November and last for the next five years.
